Pediatric Surgery Simulation-Based Training for the General Surgery Resident

BackgroundSurgical simulation-based training (SBT) can increase resident confidence and improve performance. SBT in pediatric surgery is its infancy often geared toward fellows. Since case volume for various surgery–specific procedures be low based on the rarity of pathology involved level care provided by institution, our aim was to create a curriculum general residents address this need.Materials methodsWe performed an institutional needs assessment consisting 4 surgeons' 28 residents’ ability independently perform tasks using Likert-scaled survey. These included placement silastic silo gastroschisis, percutaneous drain perforated necrotizing enterocolitis, completion laparoscopic pyloromyotomy pyloric stenosis. Models simulating these pathologies performing each procedure were generated.ResultsWe successfully created model teach how place patients with complete deemed high fidelity models survey surgeons.ConclusionsWe residents, which used supplement learning high-acuity, low-occurrence procedures. Assessment validation scores underway.
